Dielectric Spectroscopy for Scientific and Resource Characterization of Lunar Regolith
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction: Dielectric spectroscopy (DS) can noninvasively detect electrical properties over a wide frequency range (1 mHz – 10 kHz) at depths ranging from 10s cm to 10s m. Electrical properties vary directly with density and mineralogy. Therefore, DS can determine the subsurface distribution of water ice, adsorbed water, ilmenite, and possibly Fe. Understanding the subsurface distribution of these minerals is an important first step for in-situ resource utilization. The presence and subsurface distribution of these minerals can also be used to address scientific questions such as if adsorbed water exists in the subsurface, ice and/or adsorbed water are the source of the enhancement in hydrogen near the poles, and to locate immature regolith that has trapped the composition of the ancient solar wind.

Scientific and Resource Characterization of Lunar Regolith Using Dielectric
Introduction: Water ice and ilmenite both have unique dielectric responses that can be used to detect their concentration as a function of depth, noninvasively from the lunar surface. Electrical measurements at the surface can also be used to determine the density of the lunar regolith. Subsurface water ice may exist in permanently shadowed regions near the poles of the Moon [1-6]. The presence...
متن کاملSimulation of brightness temperature from lunar surface and inversion of regolith-layer thickness
[1] A correspondence of the lunar regolith-layer thickness to the lunar digital elevation mapping is proposed to tentatively construct the global distribution of lunar regolith-layer thickness. Using Clementine ultraviolet visible multispectral data, the global spatial distribution of FeO + TiO2 content on the lunar regolith layer is calculated. Thus the dielectric permittivity of the global lu...
متن کاملDetecting Water/Ice in Lunar and Martian Regoliths using Impedance Spectroscopy
1. Introduction: Detecting the presence of water/ice within planetary regoliths is crucial for future manned exploration as well as understanding the geologic history of the surface. This project is directed at fabricating a simple apparatus that can quickly measure water/ice on lunar and planetary surfaces. Using our data and data acquired from the literature, we will estimate the possibility ...
متن کاملStandard Lunar Regolith Simulants for Space Resource Utilization Technologies Development: Effects of Materials Choices
Introduction: As NASA turns its exploration ambitions towards the Moon once again, the research and development of new technologies for lunar operations face the challenge of meeting the milestones of a fast-pace schedule, reminiscent of the 1960's Apollo program. While the lunar samples returned by the Apollo and Luna missions have revealed much about the Moon, these priceless materials exist ...
متن کاملEvaluations of lunar regolith simulants
Apollo lunar regolith samples are not available in quantity for engineering studies with In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU). Therefore, with expectation of a return to the Moon, dozens of regolith (soil) simulants have been developed, to some extent a result of inefficient distribution of NASA-sanctioned simulants. In this paper, we review many of these simulants, with evaluations of their sho...
